Who Has Issues With Deadlines?

I know many of us web designers, developers, coders, plugin makers, content fiddlers, SEO worriers, and other keyboard-damaged creatures have issues with deadlines, but for some reason, extending a project deadline five times is still sometimes not enough.

The Tomorrow Trap

Sadly, I like to promise almost anything. I am a nice guy, so in emails I sometimes use the word “tomorrow,” which is a stupid idea, because tomorrow usually means tomorrow.

And that is a deadline. A very short deadline. A tiny little trap I set for myself like an idiot.

In my case, procrastination also plays a role. I like the word procrastination, especially the part where someone will eventually try to turn it into a regular diagnosis. You know, like a mental disorder.

Honestly, I am okay with having that mental disorder. I already have an idea to build a community, write a manifesto, and demand an official Procrastination Day from the government.

We would celebrate it later, obviously.

Deadline Jokes or Uncomfortable Truths?

Anyway, here are some jokes about deadlines. Or maybe they are not jokes. Maybe they are just uncomfortable little truths wearing fake noses.

A deadline is a calendar’s way of saying, “You’re fucked, but let’s pretend this was planned.”

Deadlines are like taxes: you know they’re coming, but your brain still acts surprised like a useless little idiot.

I respect deadlines deeply. That’s why I keep a respectful distance from them.

A deadline is just a date invented by someone who clearly isn’t doing the damn work.

Every deadline has two phases: “plenty of time” and “oh fuck, that was yesterday.”

I don’t miss deadlines. I let them die alone while I’m busy fighting the consequences.

A deadline is what happens when someone with a spreadsheet develops false confidence.

Every deadline is born from optimism, stupidity, and a suspicious lack of technical understanding.

A deadline is just a suggestion with anxiety attached.

Typical Reasons Deadlines Fail

Deadlines usually do not fail because of one innocent little problem. They fail because ten little bastards quietly gather in the corner, form a committee, and murder the schedule while everyone pretends the project is still “basically on track.”

Sometimes the estimate was complete fantasy. Someone looked at a messy project, ignored the hidden problems, skipped the boring details, and said, “Yes, that should be easy.” That sentence should come with a warning label and a small legal disclaimer.

Sometimes the scope starts breeding. One small feature becomes five small features. Then those five features need settings. Then the settings need styling. Then the styling reveals another bug. Then the bug was apparently there since 2024, smiling quietly like a little asshole.

Sometimes clients are waiting for you, and sometimes you are waiting for clients. Content is missing. Images are missing. Login details are missing. Feedback arrives late. Then everyone stands around acting shocked that the magical deadline fairy did not crawl out of the wall and finish the damn thing overnight.

Sometimes the developer is the problem. Yes, rude, but true. We test one thing, notice another thing, improve something nobody asked for, break something unrelated, fix it, then decide the button could be two pixels better. Very professional. Very stupid. Very familiar.

Sometimes life gets in the way. Other work, bad sleep, tired eyes, weird bugs, boring admin, broken plugins, mystery hosting issues, and the general pleasure of being trapped on Earth with a laptop and responsibilities.

So when a deadline fails, it is rarely one clean reason. It is usually a whole ugly circus of bad timing, missing information, optimistic bullshit, technical surprises, human stupidity, and small tasks that suddenly grow teeth.

My Own Beautiful Deadline Disaster

I tried setting my own deadlines for my own projects. Currently, I am working on four projects, and this blog is the fifth one. So that is already a very healthy and responsible situation.

The first project was supposed to be finished in 2022. I gave up making more deadlines for it, so it is now officially “on hold,” which is a polite way of saying it is sitting in the corner, quietly judging me.

The second and third projects are about 90% finished, which is very promising. Very inspiring. Very close to that magical final 10%, where everything suddenly becomes weirdly annoying and takes three times longer than expected.

The fourth project is… oops. Right now, I actually forgot what it is.

Then I also have a few clients I need to work for, so my own projects occasionally have to wait. Although, to be fair, I only have a few clients.

Perhaps I would have more clients if I were not such a prick about deadlines.

The Calendar Does Not Care

But then again, maybe fewer deadlines means fewer tiny calendar-shaped knives pointed at my face.

Maybe I am not failing.

Maybe I am just protecting myself from paperwork, panic, and yet another optimistic little date pretending it has control over my life.

Sadly, the calendar does not care about my excuses, my projects, or my fragile little illusion of control. It sucks.
