Women, Fake Natural Photos, Filters, and Photoshop

Heading goes here

I’ve noticed a newer trend where people share “real me” photos. The idea is simple: be proud of how you really look, do not be ashamed of your natural appearance, and stop pretending everyone wakes up looking like a magazine cover.

Nice idea.

But I’ll be honest, sometimes showing reality is a terrible idea.

This trend seems to have started mostly with movie stars, singers, influencers, and other public people posting photos without makeup. Or at least, allegedly without makeup. Because let’s not be stupid. “No makeup” often still means perfect lighting, expensive skincare, careful posing, professional phone camera settings, and possibly a tiny little bit of digital magic quietly doing its job in the background.

So the message is: “Look how brave I am, showing the real me.”

Sure. Under studio lighting. From the best angle. After choosing one photo from fifty.

Natural Beauty, Carefully Manufactured

The funny part is the hypocrisy.

For years, the entertainment industry sold people fake perfection. Perfect skin, perfect bodies, perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect everything. Then, suddenly, some of the same people turn around and say: “Everyone should accept themselves naturally.”

Very noble. Very brave. Very headline-friendly.

But let’s be honest. This is often not about honesty. It is another performance. Another branding exercise. Another way to appear relatable while still being famous, rich, professionally styled, and permanently surrounded by people whose job is to make them look better.

It is not “real life.”

It is “real life, edited for public consumption.”

Some Things Are Better With a Filter

I’m not saying every woman without makeup looks bad. To be honest, many women look perfectly fine without it. Some even look better, because heavy makeup can make people look fake, tired, or like they are preparing for a nightclub located inside a funeral home.

But yes, sometimes reality is not flattering. That is life. Not everyone is visually blessed. Some people look better with makeup, better lighting, better styling, or a well-behaved camera angle.

And that is not a crime.

The problem is pretending that the fake version is natural, then preaching authenticity from the top of the filtered mountain.

That is the bullshit part.

Ordinary Women Usually Look Fine

Not long ago, I was in an eye clinic where everyone had to be without makeup. For men, that is normal, at least for now. Maybe one day men will also be expected to arrive with foundation, eyebrow gel, and emotional support contouring.

I looked around and thought: why the hell do women wear so much makeup?

Most of the young women looked fine. Most of the older ladies looked fine too. Normal faces. Normal skin. Normal humans. Nothing dramatic. Nobody exploded because their eyeliner was missing.

It made me think that many women probably do not need makeup as much as they think they do. Some use it because they enjoy it, which is fair enough. Some use it because society keeps telling them they are not good enough without it. And some probably use it because Instagram has poisoned everyone’s brain.

But in real life, people are usually much less ugly than social media makes them believe.

I Am Guilty Too

Of course, I am not pretending to be some saint of natural beauty.

Sometimes I need my own photo. I do not really do selfies. If I need a photo, I prefer something closer to a proper portrait. I take maybe fifty photos, hate forty-nine of them, choose one that does not make me look like a tired hostage, and then Photoshop enters the room.

A few skin spots must disappear. Some wrinkles need to calm down. Skin texture needs to be reduced, but not destroyed. White balance needs fixing. Color needs adjustment. The photo needs to look like me, just the version of me that slept properly, drank water, and did not spend half the day arguing with technology.

Basically, I want to keep at least 70% of myself.

That is the honest hypocrisy. I do not want to look fake, but I also do not want every tiny skin disaster preserved forever in glorious high resolution.

Photoshop Is Not the Enemy

Photoshop itself is not the problem. Filters are not the problem. Makeup is not the problem.

The problem is lying about it.

If a photo is edited, fine. If someone uses makeup, fine. If someone chooses flattering light, fine. Everyone wants to look decent. Nobody wakes up and says, “Today I hope my face looks like a legal complaint.”

But do not sell a heavily managed photo as brave honesty. Do not use professional lighting, soft focus, cosmetic treatments, posing, editing, and then write “raw and natural” under it.

That is not raw.

That is marketing with a moisturizer.

Do We Really Want the Truth From Entertainers?

The main question is: do we actually want to see the truth from entertainers?

Honestly, I do not think I do.

Entertainers are part of fantasy. Actors, singers, models, influencers, and public personalities are selling an image. That image does not have to be completely real. In some cases, it probably should not be completely real.

I do not need every famous person to show me their tired morning face, bad skin day, swollen eyes, or “I just woke up and regret being alive” expression.

Some mystery is good. Some illusion is useful. Some faces are better after coffee, lighting, and professional intervention.

Being ugly sucks. Looking tired sucks. Looking older sucks. Pretending none of it matters is just another fashionable lie.

So What Is an Ugly Person?

Visually, an ugly person is someone whose appearance creates a strongly negative first impression. Usually it comes from poor facial harmony, noticeable asymmetry, bad proportions, weak bone structure, unhealthy-looking skin, bad teeth, poor posture, obesity, deformities, terrible grooming, or simply an overall look that feels unpleasant rather than attractive.

That sounds harsh, because it is harsh.

But everyone knows this exists. People can pretend beauty is only subjective, but that is not fully true. Some features are widely seen as attractive. Some features are widely seen as unattractive. Symmetry, healthy skin, balanced proportions, good posture, and decent grooming usually help. Severe structural flaws, poor hygiene, and bad presentation usually do not.

Personality can make someone more attractive over time. Grooming can help a lot. Style can save many people from visual disaster. But no, personality does not magically rewrite someone’s face. That is a cute fairy tale, not reality.

The Real Problem Is Fake Honesty

The most annoying thing about the “real me” trend is not that people want to look good. Everyone wants to look good.

The annoying thing is the performance of honesty.

A celebrity posts a “natural” photo, gets praised for bravery, receives headlines, gains engagement, and then probably returns to a world of stylists, filters, treatments, makeup artists, personal trainers, and expensive skincare routines.

Meanwhile, ordinary people look at themselves in a normal mirror under normal bathroom lighting and wonder why they look worse.

That is the trick.

The entertainment industry helped create the insecurity, then sells “authenticity” as the cure.

And yes, that sucks.
