How Simple X Video Downloader Works
When you open a post containing a video on X.com, a small red download icon appears directly over the supported video. Click it and the extension finds the highest available quality video provided by X.
There is no quality menu to wrestle with, no media URL to copy, and no separate downloader website to open. Choose where you want to save the file and you’re done.
Videos are downloaded from X’s media infrastructure. Simple X Video Downloader does not use an external downloader service or send your video through somebody else’s conversion server.
The extension also creates a readable filename instead of leaving you with a mysterious pile of media files called something resembling video_4837298472398.mp4.
Download Videos in the Highest Available Quality
Video downloading is the main purpose of the extension, so Download videos is enabled by default.
When you click the download icon, the extension checks the video versions available from X and automatically selects the highest available resolution. There is no reason to make users choose 480p, 720p, 1080p, and whatever else when the obvious choice is usually: give me the best one.
The important word is available. If X only provides a 720p version of a particular video, the extension cannot magically recover detail that was never there. If a higher-resolution version is available, the extension will prefer it.

Each photo receives its own button. If a post contains four images, you get four individual download icons. Click the button on image number three and only image number three is downloaded.
No menu. No unnecessary Download All button.
The extension attempts to download the original image made available by X rather than deliberately saving the smaller preview currently displayed in your timeline. That matters because X may display a resized or reformatted copy depending on your screen, page layout, and other factors.

Simple Chrome Extension Settings
Click the Simple X Video Downloader icon in your Chrome toolbar and you will find two switches.
Download videos
Enabled by default. When switched on, download buttons appear on supported videos. Turn it off and the video buttons disappear.
Download images
Disabled by default. Enable it when you also want download buttons on supported images.
Both settings are independent, so you can use any combination:
- Videos ON, Images OFF
- Videos ON, Images ON
- Videos OFF, Images ON
- Videos OFF, Images OFF
Yes, both can be OFF. The extension will then quietly do nothing until you change your mind. Sometimes doing nothing is a perfectly respectable feature.
Your choices are remembered, and changing either option takes effect on an already-open X page without requiring a reload.
Privacy Respected
Simple X Video Downloader does not use analytics or trackers. It does not send usage statistics, heartbeats, or reports about your browsing activity to me.
There is also no external downloader service. Videos and images are downloaded using X’s own media infrastructure rather than being routed through a third-party downloader or conversion website.

The extension obviously needs to interact with X.com and X’s related media infrastructure to identify and download the media you request. Beyond what is necessary to make that work, the philosophy is pleasantly uneventful: leave the user alone.
Error Log and Feedback
X changes constantly. Something working perfectly today can occasionally stop because X has changed the way its website delivers videos, images, or post information.
That is why the extension includes a small Error Log.
Open the extension popup and click Error log in the Feedback section. If something relevant failed, you will see a short error message together with the installed extension version.
The Error Log is local and temporary. It is there for troubleshooting, not tracking. Reloading or closing the X tab clears it.

What Are the Limits?
Simple X Video Downloader is intentionally focused. It downloads media X makes available, but it is not a universal media laboratory.
A few limitations are worth knowing:
- Download quality depends on what X provides for that post.
- A low-resolution original remains low resolution.
- Some restricted or unusual posts may behave differently.
- Deleted or unavailable media obviously cannot be downloaded.
- Network problems or temporary X outages can prevent downloads.
- Major changes to X may occasionally require an extension update.
- The extension is designed for X.com and legacy Twitter.com URLs, not every social network.
- Downloading media does not give you permission to republish somebody else’s work.

Does it always download the highest-quality X video?
It downloads the highest available quality provided by X for that video. The extension automatically compares the available video versions and selects the highest resolution. There is no manual quality selector because most people downloading a video simply want the best version available.
If X only provides a lower-resolution source, however, the extension cannot manufacture genuine additional detail.
Can I download images from X too?
Yes. Open the extension popup and enable Download images. Once enabled, every downloadable image gets its own icon. On a four-photo post, for example, you can download one specific photo rather than being forced to download all four.
The extension also tries to obtain the highest available source resolution instead of simply saving the smaller image visible in your timeline.
Can I use it only for images?
Yes. Disable Download videos and enable Download images. The two features operate independently. You can also enable both or disable both. There is no forced configuration.
Why doesn’t Chrome always remember the folder where I saved my previous video?
The Save As window belongs to Chrome and your operating system, so the extension does not have complete control over which folder Chrome initially displays. The extension provides a useful filename and asks Chrome to open the Save As dialog. Chrome then decides how that dialog behaves, including which location it initially shows.
I prefer keeping useful filenames and letting you choose the destination rather than sacrificing that simply to try to influence Chrome’s folder behavior.
Does the extension send my video to another downloader server?
No. There is no external downloader service. The extension finds the media available from X and downloads it directly from X’s media servers to your computer.
You do not need to paste your X post into some third-party website first.
What should I do if the download button stops working?
First, try another ordinary public post. If that works, the issue may be limited to one particular video or image. If downloads generally stop working, open the extension popup and check Error log. Copy the displayed information and leave it in the comments below this article.
X changes regularly, and occasionally those changes can affect how the extension finds media. An actual error message gives me something useful to investigate.
Does Simple X Video Downloader track what I download?
No. The extension does not use analytics or browsing trackers and does not maintain a history of the videos and images you download.
Your basic preferences, such as whether video and image downloading are enabled, are saved locally so you do not have to configure them every time.
The Error log is also temporary and exists only to help diagnose problems.
